Trees require certain essential elements to function and grow. An essential element is a chemical element that is involved in the metabolism of the tree, of necessary for the tree to complete its life cycle. For trees growing in a forest site, these elements are usually present in sufficient quantities in the soil. Landscape trees or urban trees, however, may be growing in soils that do not contain sufficient available nutrients for satisfactory growth and development. It may be necessary to fertilize or adjust the soil pH to increase available nutrients.
      Fertilizing a tree can increase growth , reduce susceptibility to certain diseases and pests and can ever help reverse declining health. However if the fertilizer is not applied wisely, it may not benefit the tree at all, and may adversely affect the tree. Mature trees making satisfactory growth may not require fertilization. Nitrogen can unnecessarily increase growth requiring more pruning. It is important to recognize when a tree needs supplemental fertilizer, what nutrients are needed, and when and how it should be applied.
      Trees take up essential nutrients through the root system when dissolved in water. They are known as Macronutrients . the most important is Nitrogen, another is phosphorus, and another is Potassium. These are required in large quantities and are usually present in the soil. Then there are the Micronutrients these consist mostly of boron, chlorine, copper, manganese, and zinc. Beechnut tree uses many different forms of fertilizer. the organic and inorganic types. a particular type we often use is the controlled release type. This releases the fertilizer over a period of time as to control what is called fertilizer burn. It is very important to fertilize your trees when there is sufficient amounts of water available. The period of most active root growth and most effective time is in Spring and Fall.
        Beechnut tree uses a broadcast system to fertilize trees. it is spread over the surface using a spreader that is calibrated to use the precise amount. We also use the drilled hole method where we place granules in holes spaced 2 to 3 ft. apart around the drip edge of the tree where all the absorbing roots are located. This type of fertilizing gets the fertilizer right down next to the roots for immediate uptake. There is a third type that we are testing out and that is liquid injection .  So to recap you may want to fertilize your trees if you think that they are deficient . If you look at your trees and they look a bit yellow or are yellowing on some of the leaves then you might need to fertilize them . Palm trees often need fertilizing and a lot of Fruit trees need a lot of fertilizing to produce optimum fruit output.       Its been quite a year 2018, After going through Hurricane Irma in 2017, 2018 started out for us as a busy year and we were still pruning limbs that had broken in tops of tree's to removing the trees that had bent over from the high winds and were in jeopardy of leaning more and causing problems and much, much, more. After going to various seminars in January to expand my knowledge in the Arborist field, we purchased various new equipment to upgrade our inventory with 3 new saws, 2 new climbing saws and 1 new large saw. This helps us keep our edge over the competition. We also had our trucks in the shop getting them maintained and checked out so that we have the best equipment in the business.
       As spring emerged and the flowers came out Beechnut tree started on our fertilization programs to feed the Palms , Hardwoods , and other fruiting tree's all that had weathered a harsh winter and needed some food for the next years growth.        As spring turned into summer we stayed busy with our regular clients doing there tree trimming and also there palm trimming . It was a pretty wet summer and the tree's grew quite a bit with the adequate amount of rain that we got so there was plenty of tree elevations to be done and quite a lot of deadwooding, crown thinning , and crown reductions that were necessary to keep the trees out of the way and remove hazardous branches . During the summer I had the opportunity to go to Columbus Ohio to the ISA Tree climbing championships that are held annually throughout the world . If you have never gone to one of these I highly recommend it . I was able to pick up a few pointers to help me in my quest to be the best tree climber in Pasco County. Ha ha ! But I did manage to get a few more safety items that I use everyday now on the job to make tree work safer and more efficient.
       I was even able to save a cat that had been stuck in the top of a tree for more then 15 hrs. And after calling everybody from the Fire dept. to the Police dept. and various tree services they finally called Beechnut tree service. the only one to do the job. Actually It wasn't that hard , the cat had been up there for so long that it practically jumped in my lap. It was ready to come down. So after the Cat rescue it was back to doing the things to get ready for fall like elevating trees, demossing trees, and of course removing deadwood from tree's . Then Summer turned to fall and I attended a couple of very good seminars that went into detail about the do's and don'ts of felling trees. and the pressures that various limbs have on them while being cut. how to maintain equipment and how to save someone who is stuck in a tree and can't get out. 
      Well as fall grew into winter and the year was coming to an end Beechnut tree care and our staff took time to remember what a fabulous year it had been and how we are looking forward to the New year.          I had a gentleman ask me the other day when I was on a job to come over to his home two doors down and give him a price on trimming his tree's , I said ok and after I was done with my customers tree's proceeded to go over and look at his . Well he wanted various limbs trimmed off of his roof and others around the perimeter of the home. After giving the estimate he thought that was too high of a price. The next month I was over at my customers home again this time doing some hedge trimming and noticed that the tree's that the neighbor wanted trimmed had been cut, not only cut but severely hacked up and stubbed off. My customer said that he had gotten them trimmed by someone and was wondering if they had trimmed it properly. Well of course the tree's looked terrible. Just goes to show you get what you pay for. She said that he told her that it was expensive and just a bit lower then my bid.          Another time I used to do this gentlemen's Date palm every year. Well as anyone knows the more you trim a palm the faster it grows. But he always wanted this palm looking like a pineapple . So after 4 to 5 years of trimming this palm every year then came 2017 and hurricane Irma. Beechnut tree was swamped after the hurricane passed and we were working 12 hr. days just trying to keep up and the man called and wanted the palm trimmed. Well I called him to tell him that we were just doing emergency work for a while. apparently he could not wait and got another tree company to trim it . So this year he called me asking me to trim this palm and when I went by to look at the palm it was so tall now that I needed to use my big ladder. So I had to raise the price. Well he almost had a heart attack over the phone and said he was going to get another price. Beechnut tree will always try to give you the best price we can but like this gentleman found out when it comes to palms the price cannot stay the same forever, nothing ever does. But we will still try to give the best price.
