I get asked a lot by folks if there tree is safe, should they trim there tree or should the tree be removed. There is not one particular answer that I can give because every tree is different and every tree is unique. But here are a few pointers that I can give to determine the tree's condition and if it needs trimmed. if your tree limbs are obstructing any buildings or are laying on roofs, wires, crossing each other, hanging down where they are getting in the way of your home or driveway, hanging over the sidewalk, or the road. then you probably need to get those limbs trimmed. Limbs can also be trimmed for structural purposes. This is used to bring a structural stability to the tree and bring the tree back to its natural form. Palm tree trimming is done to remove dead fronds and seeds that become a nusense and litter your yard. A type of pruning done to palms called Hurricane pruning should be avoided at all costs and is very harmful to palm trees in general. Sometimes a type of pruning that is called thinning is done. This type of pruning removes some of the internal limbs that are inside the crown of the tree this has no real effect on the tree except to let more light in and if done improperly could cause more harm then good. So it is advisable to only take out the weak and dying branches from the inside or any branches that are crossed over each other and could cause decay and break down the road. Also taking out vines , mistletoe , and other parasites is a good thing for the tree. Here in the south we deal with moss that grows on the tree's and I'm asked a lot if the moss hurts the tree and my answer is always that moss in its self does not hurt the tree unless it gets so thick that it blocks out the light and thereby hinders Photosynthesis to the tree. Remember that tree's don't require a lot of trimming but sometimes it is necessary to trim them to make them safe for people and to keep them healthy and happy.
There are many reasons to remove a tree . Perhaps that tree is dead and has become a hazard because of where it is located or perhaps it is just that the tree was planted in the wrong place and is obstructing something . Or maybe it was just planted to close to a structure like a house or garage, Or maybe it wasn't even planted by humans and just grew there on its own . There are many reasons why tree's need to be removed . I've heard them all sometimes the reason could be that the owner is tired of cleaning off his or her driveway or roof of leaves and debris , and sometimes it is because they would like more light on there pool. There are good reasons like I discussed earlier. Maybe the tree roots are starting to lift up your driveway, or maybe you have Pine tree's that are constantly dripping sap on your vehicles .
I have had a few people tell me after I removed there tree that they wished later on that they would have kept the tree because of the increase in there electric bills each month from not having the tree there. Tree Safety, I am always being asked is my tree safe? Well the answer is not that easy to determine. Sometimes a tree can look perfectly healthy and fall , and other times it can look like its going to fall and be perfectly safe. A lot of the time the tree will show various signs when it is either dying or in decline . Obviously when the tree looses its leaves when its not supposed to then it can become unsafe and needs to be removed. And sometimes when a tree has a structural defect then it can also be unsafe . there are a lot of signs when a tree is unsafe and one of the most common signs are when a tree has a trunk with included bark. That is when the tree has two or more trunks that are growing close together and the bark from the two leads are rubbing up against each other then decay starts between the two and the pressure of those two limbs growing against one another eventually causes one of them to split and thus causes the limb to fail . The tree can look perfectly healthy but the pressure gets to great and the failure is imminent . It is not a bad idea to have a Certified Arborist come out and evaluate your tree's if you have any worries about them. I can remember one time in particular when a lady asked me about a limb that was growing parallel to her roof approximately 2 ft. from the top of her roof . She was worried about the limb and I told her that the limb was fine and I trimmed the ends of it and it lifted to about 3 ft. Well I guess she still wasn't happy with my conclusion and hired another tree service to remove the limb . About a year later a large section of another live oak on the other side with Included bark split and came down on the top of her home. So it just goes to show that you never know when a tree is going to fail but it never hurts to have a professional tree service or a Certified Arborist examine your tree's just in case.
In Closing I will say that if you think your tree's might need some work then don't try to do it yourself . Hire a professional because the few dollars you try to save by doing it yourself can cost you dearly down the road.
